Mile 0 Fest Key West 2019
How lucky am I to live in paradise and get to experience my favorite Red Dirt Americana Music from Texas and Oklahoma right here in my islands? Very lucky, indeed. I was fortunate enough to hook up with someone from the festival's promotion company last year for the very first Mile 0 Fest Key West in 2018. I helped her with some advertising and ticket giveaways, scored some free passes, and made a friend! Even though they completely sold out and didn't really need any advertising or ticket giveaways this year, she still took care of me with a couple of free passes and access to the media tent. It was such a nice treat for Scott and me! Sadly, we couldn't attend all 4 days, but we definitely made the most of the 2 days we were there and packed in as much music (and rum) as possible!

In The Spotlight: I'm With Her
Okay, this was my political status once, but this post is not about politics. It's about a new band that I just found and I have to share it with you. You know that finding new music is one of my greatest joys in life. I'm thrilled to have stumbled across this trio today. Actually, I'm a little surprised they weren't already on my radar; they have apparently been making music together since 2014.
With Sara Watkins playing fiddle, Sarah Jarosz on mandolin and Aoife O'donovan playing guitar or even piano, and their voices blending and complimenting each other perfectly... they are a joy to the ears.
The three first performed together as an impromptu collaboration at the Telluride Bluegrass Festival in 2014. In 2015 they began to play together more and more at music festivals, and then they began writing together. They recently announced their first album, titled "See You Around," is due out in February... CLICK TO READ MORE

FEATURED ALBUM: "The Nashville Sound" by Jason Isbell & The 400 Unit
Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit's "The Nashville Sound" is the newest by this American/Southern Rock band. Singer/songwriter Jason Isbell, formerly with the Drive By Truckers, has certainly established himself as a solo artist and front man.
Once again, his lyrics hit it home with a mixture of sadness and regret, mingled with hope and the love of home and family.
CLICK HERE TO LISTEN TO THE ALBUM
Jason Isbell's wife, Amanda Shires, is currently touring with the band, along with his youngest fan, Mercy Rose, the couple's 18 month old daughter.
Isbell says he enjoys having his little girl on the road with him and dreads the day when that isn't practical any longer.

What's Playin'?
What is Suzi listening to today?
Hey y'all, I know it's been a while since I gave you a play list. A lot has happened in my life since my last music post! Americana and classic country music have taken on a whole new importance to me now that I'm hosting a radio show on a country music radio station! If you're curious, you can listen to my show by streaming it live from www.thundercountry.com, every Sunday from 6 PM - Midnight. I've discovered some new Americana, and also re-discovered a lot of old classic country.
Here are some songs that have been in heavy rotation lately:

By the Way...
It was late in the year of 1992, and I had been dating Scott for a few months when I wrote the words to "By the Way." I remember that I gave him a copy of my love poem, and when I saw him again 2 days later he had turned my poem into a song. I've been writing verse for as long as I can remember, often humming along with the tune in my head as I wrote. It is an indescribable thrill to have someone hear the song in my words. With his lovely finger picking and string harmonics, together we wrote a beautiful song, if I do say so myself!
He is performing at a wedding today, and the couple chose it as their recessional song. The first time he performed "By the Way" at a wedding was for some friends and we were actually in the wedding party. Tony and Shelly loved our song and had Scott play and sing it for their first dance.
That was in 1999.
Over the years, he has played more weddings than he can even remember. Many brides and grooms request "By the Way"...

RIP David Bowie
January 8, 1947 - January 10, 2016
David Robert Jones, known professionally as David Bowie, was an English singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, record producer, arranger, painter and actor. He was a figure in popular music for over four decades, and was known as an innovator. His influence on pop music is unique; he reinvented his own image multiple times and constantly challenged the core belief of rock music of every decade since the 60's.
I personally knew and loved the song "Space Oddity" as long as I can really remember. And "Changes" represented the angst of my teen years. But, sometime during the year I turned 18, one of our famous "midnight movie road trips to Atlanta" put me in the theater watching the movie "Ziggy Stardust & The Spiders From Mars Farewell Tour." I'm only kinda joking when I say that it changed my life.

Suzi's Music: Rani Arbo & Daisy Mayhem
I saw this interview with one of my favorite bands on No Depression this week and thought I would share.
It's an interesting read.

It's an interesting read.
Playful and profound are perfect words to describe Rani Arbo & Daisy Mayhem.
I was first introduced to them right at 5 years ago. I remember listening to them one evening and then being haunted by them for days afterwards. If memory serves, I immediately downloaded 2 of their cd's and played them over and over.
Some songs are playful to the point of silly...my favorite being their version of "Singing in the Bathtub."

On This Day In Music History
On this day in 1962, two Jazz greats went into Rudy Van Gelder's Hackensack studio to record their album, simply titled "Duke Ellington & John Coltrane".
The 63-year-old Ellington was a legend, and Coltrane, at a mere 36, was becoming one of the biggest and brightest young stars in the Jazz world.
In the LP's notes, Coltrane wrote that he was honored to have the opportunity to work with Duke, musing that Ellington "has set standards I haven’t caught up with yet."
Here's a video clip of the two performing "In A Sentimental Mood".

What's Playin'?
I've been on the road a lot (again) this last week or so. Here are some of the songs that came up on my driving music playlist today.
Music is the only that makes driving long distance bearable.
Turn it up loud and sing!
What's playing on Suzi's ipod today?
1. "The Devil Is My Running Mate" - Jason Isbell
2. "Bastards Of The Highway" - John Moreland & The Black Gold Band
3. "Hey Rider" - Band Of Heathens
4. "Call Me The Breeze" - Eric Clapton
5. "Can't Help But Wonder Where I'm Bound" - Nanci Griffith
6. "My Baby Drives" - Justin Townes Earle
7. "Run Off To LA" - Kid Rock & Sheryl Crow
8. "A Good Country Mile" - Kevin Kinney & The Golden Palominos
9. "On The Way Back Home" - Lucero
10. "Straight To Hell" - Hard Working Americans
When this came on up today, I was driving in torrential rain. I turned it up even louder (to hear it over the rain) and sang...then I hit repeat and did it again!
If I couldn't sing, I couldn't drive.
...straight to Hell...yeah probably...

Music Calendar for August
Well, better late than never! My apologies for being so tardy updating the live music calendar for August. It's finally done, but there seem to be a lot of blanks.
This year has been a strange year for the upper Keys music scene. We've lost several of our regular local great singers and players to tragedy, a few have relocated, and some of our "kids" are on their way back to school. But, while folks like Debbie Hawkins and Jimmy McGuirl (may they both rest in peace) have joined the all-star band of Keys players who were waiting for them on the other side... I'm betting that some of the others like Micah and Jess will be back because nobody can stay away from the fabulous Florida Keys for very long if they can help it... and while we wish the best for our wonderfully talented young'uns like Leah, Jackie, Nyan and more, we all know they will be back because this is home and we know their parents!
But, I know there are still plenty of entertainers playing and singing every night in the Keys.
Who's playing on Wednesday nights? I got nothin'!
So, please do me a favor. Take a look at the calendar and help me fill in the holes.
- If you are a musician and want to be added, please send me your schedule.
- If you are a bar or music venue owner/manager and want to add your line-up, please send me your schedule.
- If you are a music lover and want to see an act or venue added, please let me know... and help me get their schedules, if possible.
This is a working project, and I appreciate all the help I can get to keep it current and accurate.
Thanks in advance for your help!
