My Keys Weekly Newspapers Article

Suzi Youngberg is too sweet. Sweet like the blackberries she remembers picking with her grandmother when she was little growing up in rural Georgia. She later had a lucrative career in corporate sales and spent a lot of time on the road even after moving to the Keys in 1997. That was until her husband, Scott, was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer that meant six months of treatment in Boston.
“We were looking at bankruptcy,” she said. “This town really came together and helped us raise money.” But it still wasn’t enough. That’s when Suzi made the phone call to the American Cancer Society. “It’s a number I give to anyone who has the ‘C’ word in their life.” (1-800-227-2345)
From there, the two of them moved into American Cancer Society’s Hope Lodge in Boston. “It’s basically like the Ronald McDonald House for adults,” she said. “It was the most healing, peaceful experience of my life, and I vowed at that moment I would spend the rest of my life raising money for American Cancer Society.”
Once Scott was cleared and the two were back in the Keys, she quit her traveling job and set her roots into the community. As a member of Upper Keys BPW, “I’ve met more people and made more friends in the last two years than I did the first 18 years we lived down here,” she said.
That’s when she saw something on Facebook about the upcoming Relay for Life walk. She and Scott asked what they could do to help out. Fast forward a few years, and Suzi is now the society’s Community Development Manager for the Florida Keys. “We were just given so much help, we felt the need to give back,” she said.
Her typical day now consists of committee meetings, chamber meetings, recruiting teams, and seeking sponsorships for Making Strides walk, Relay for Life, and the Diamond Gala. “All the traveling I did before, traveling up and down the Keys is nothing,” she said.
So, we wanted to know about Suzi, who also is currently nominated for Woman of the Year. The winner will be announced at the Upper Keys BPW political forum on Oct. 17 at Whale Harbor in Islamorada.
How did you end up with American Cancer Society? I was tired of traveling after spending 20 years living in a hotel room — and knowing I might lose my husband, I knew I needed more together time with him and at home in my community.
One fun fact about you? I love my cat SugarBear like my child. He rescued us back in 2013. He walks on a leash, travels everywhere with us, including Colorado a few summers ago. People around our community know the big white cat on a leash … he even goes to Bill’s Liquor and a few other bars.
What’s the most rewarding project you’ve worked on? I love raising money for the American Cancer Society. I believe strongly in the mission.
What does success look like? Being happy with what I have and where I am in life.
Proudest achievement? When I first started dating my husband, I gave him a “love poem” that a few days later turned into a song. It was such a thrill! We have since written several songs together, and my younger brother who is also a musician and I have also collaborated on a song. We have a “Caribbean Soul” and when I have time, I write on Suzi’s World (suzisworld.com).
Dream meal: you are sitting at a diner counter eating … who walks in and sits next to you, what are you ordering? My favorite meal is bread, cheese and wine. And I can make conversation with anyone who happens to sit down next to me.
Favorite Keysy thing to do? I love being out on the water. I miss spending the night out and waking up on the Florida Bay.
What would your superpower be? Always wished I could fly.
Best piece of advice you ever received? Be happy.
What is your nerdiest passion? I’m a sci-fi nerd — “Star Trek,”“Star Wars,” even a little “Dr. Who.”
What was your first thought this morning? I have to get these questions answered for Kristen. And, I have an event in four days, YIKES!
Favorite guilty pleasure? When I traveled for a living, I was in different towns every night, and Outback was one of my favorite dinner spots because it felt familiar. When I am in Key West and have extra time, I often go in the Outback for their seared tuna; people look at me funny when I say I went to Key West and got tuna from Outback.
If you won the lottery, what’s the first thing you do/buy? Take care of my parents! My mom has Parkinson’s and Daddy is her caretaker, so I would love to have lots of money to put them in a fabulous place to have her taken care of and let him travel and enjoy himself.
If you could change the world, what would you do? More love, less hate. I wish people would be kinder and think about their words and actions and how the effect others. Yes, it’s a cliché, but I always wish for world peace.
What did you want to be when you grew up? A writer. The great American novel is on my bucket list.
We heard you can sell anything; what’s the craziest thing you sold? Anyone need size 15 men’s pink Converse?
Finish these sentences…
Scott, my husband, would describe me as … Loving, quirky, messy, and, lately, very distracted. He is very patient when I have an event looming and get a little crazy!
My autobiography would be titled… “The World According to Suzi.”
I live by the motto … Money isn’t everything, find happiness and be nice.
Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk will take place in Key West on Saturday, Oct. 13* at Key West Amphitheater; with registration at 8 a.m., teams can still sign up. This year’s theme is “Younite” and she hopes to unite the Keys by having bigger all-inclusive events. (*NOTE-2019 Walks: October 12 in Key West, October 20 in Key Largo, and October 26 in Marathon.)
Last question: What’s a “Booby” drink?
Gilberts donates the proceeds from all the pink frozen “booby” drinks to American Cancer Society. (The Key Largo Bridge Bra Walk will be at Gilbert's Resort on October 20!)
(This was written by Kristen Livengood, and published in The Keys Weekly Newspapers on October 12, 2018.  Thanks to the Weekly for the great write up and for all their support of American Cancer Society in the Keys!)

I work for the American Cancer Society!

I am pleased, tickled, proud and excited to announce that I now work for the American Cancer Society.  When I made the decision to stop traveling for a living back in 2015, it was a big jump. I left a great job, making good money and security.  It was all to be able to stay home, spend more time with Scott, and become more a part of my community.  I made a decision at that time that money wasn't everything, and luckily Scott agreed!  We tightened our belts, cut back, stayed home more (not really a sacrifice since that was part of the whole decision to begin with!) and let life change.  I have kept a tie to the corporate life in the form of a consultant, but it doesn't require travel and provides a little additional income, but other than that, I have been searching.

I tried my own company, with Suzi's Promoplans, a franchise of my father-in-law's business in Tennessee. (see promoplans.com.)  But, promotional products are a very saturated market in the Keys, and I found it very hard to get more than small "one off" orders.  When the local radio stations offered me a job selling advertising about that same time, I took the plunge.  I was successful as a radio advertising salesperson, and it gave me a chance to be out in the community meeting people. But, something happened that I hadn't expected... I discovered that I love being on the radio!

Thanks to the country station program manager, Doug Hitchcock, I was given a shift as DJ for a 6 hour Classic Country Sunday Night show.  That was so much fun!  I got to pick all the music, and do the voice tracks for the whole show, every week.  It was awesome.  I also sold a live one hour talk radio show at 3 different locations, and co-hosted it with the lovely Kim Chesher. The Treasure Chest Radio Show was so much fun to create and co-host for so long.  If the show happened to be sold today, I could probably be coerced into co-hosting.... hint, hint...

Since my husband Scott went through cancer treatment back in 2014, I have been volunteering for the American Cancer Society, including being the lead of the local Relay for Life for 2 years. When the position was offered to be ACS staff, as Community Development Manager for the Florida Keys, I was thrilled to be considered! To be able to work my passion was a dream come true.

My duties include the Relay for Life, Making Strides Against Breast Cancer and the Diamond Gala Events of the Florida Keys.  Making contacts, recruiting volunteers and sponsors, working with venues and planning events are all part of my job description.  How perfect, right!?!  The ACS seems to be a good place to work; invested in the health and well being of their employees as well as the all important mission.

If you have questions about the American Cancer Society, it's mission, how the ACS can help you, or want more information on events in the Keys, contact me!

Honey Moon

June 20th, it will be a Honey Moon

A Full Moon hasn’t landed smack on the solstice since 1948. It’s the kind of thing that would have inspired the Mayans to shove a few extra in-laws from their pyramids. The sort of coincidence that would have made the Stonehenge folks haul additional stones into position. But that’s what’s actually happening on Monday, June 20.

This has visible in-your-face consequences. The solstice is of course the day with the most minutes of sunshine. It’s when the midday Sun is the year’s highest. When the sun rises at its leftmost spot on the horizon and sets at its rightmost position. When the setting sun sprays into windows at a strange angle, and touches bits of furniture that are not illuminated at any other time. It’s when the Sun’s path across the sky makes its longest and most curvy arc.

Then you have the full Moon. By landing exactly on the solstice, this Full Moon doesn’t just rise as the sun sets but is opposite the Sun in all other ways too. The Sun gets super high so this Moon must be super-low. Even at its loftiest at 1 AM, it’s downright wimpy-low. This forces its light through thicker air, which also tends to be humid this time of year, and the combination typically makes it amber colored.

This is the true Honey Moon.

The moment of full Moon is early Monday morning. So it will look equally full on Sunday night and Monday night. You get two chances to enjoy the Solstice honeymoon.

RIP Chad

Keys beloved Chad Gardner left us this week. Our little community has been hit too hard lately...we have suffered a lot of losses. One thing I am sure of, they will be eating well at the big table in the sky today.  Here is the official announcement from the family:
Chad Gardner, on Monday January 18th, 2016 collapsed at his restaurant due to a massive heart attack. After 4 days of being in two different hospitals, running tests, trying procedures to reduce swelling in his brain, we finally have received a new scan and information from the doctors which have confirmed what we were most dreading. Chad has sustained severe brain damage because oxygen was not being pumped from his heart. The loss of oxygen to his brain and swelling has caused there to be no more brain function. Multiple tests have proven that he is no longer with us. Chad is an organ donor and his organs will be used to help other people. At this time our family is thankful for the prayers and well wishes from the community but would like to be given a few days to process this information and make arrangements. We will be planning a community celebration of life in Chads honor and that will be announced at a later date. Thank you for you understanding. He's riding off into the sunset.

Featured Restaurant/Bar/Resort: Florida Keys Brewing Company

Living The Island Life...Drinking The Local Beer

Florida Keys Brewing Company in Islamorada is the only brewing company in the Florida Keys.

If you walk down Morada Way on most days, you can smell the hops and other wonderful aromatic odors coming out of a true brewing operation.

And the beer is really good!

Craig and Cheryl McBay own and run FKBC.

They founded the brewing company on these principles:

Brewing as an art,
enjoying great beer,
and living the island life.

Located at 200 Morada Way in Islamorada, Craig and Cheryl started the company with the hopes of bringing great beer to our chain of islands and meeting the thirsty needs of its inhabitants. They have succeeded.

All of the island themed beers are brewed with top quality ingredients to make the best beer possible, including:
Hogfish Amber, Run Aground Brown, Man O War Wheat, and Sunsessional IPA (my favorite!)

Their tasting room is a beautiful work of art...the inside walls are tiled with bottle caps, and local artists like Pasta Pantaleo and Wyland have left their mark on the walls inside and out.

And their colorful Key-sey logo is art as well.

Stop by the Florida Keys Brewing Company, check out the brewing process, and then relax in the tasting room and enjoy these locally brewed craft beers.
They even have flights available if you want to try them all!  And, be sure and buy your very own growler so you can take home some of your favorite.

Music Calendar for August

Well, better late than never!  My apologies for being so tardy updating the live music calendar for August. It's finally done, but there seem to be a lot of blanks.

This year has been a strange year for the upper Keys music scene.  We've lost several of our regular local great singers and players to tragedy, a few have relocated, and some of our "kids" are on their way back to school.  But, while folks like Debbie Hawkins and Jimmy McGuirl (may they both rest in peace) have joined the all-star band of Keys players who were waiting for them on the other side... I'm betting that some of the others like Micah and Jess will be back because nobody can stay away from the fabulous Florida Keys for very long if they can help it... and while we wish the best for our wonderfully talented young'uns like Leah, Jackie, Nyan and more, we all know they will be back because this is home and we know their parents!

But, I know there are still plenty of entertainers playing and singing every night in the Keys.
Who's playing on Wednesday nights?  I got nothin'!

So, please do me a favor.  Take a look at the calendar and help me fill in the holes.
  • If you are a musician and want to be added, please send me your schedule.
  • If you are a bar or music venue owner/manager and want to add your line-up, please send me your schedule.
  • If you are a music lover and want to see an act or venue added, please let me know... and help me get their schedules, if possible.

This is a working project, and I appreciate all the help I can get to keep it current and accurate.
Thanks in advance for your help!

Mini Lobster Season

In the Florida Keys, the two day sport lobster season, better known as "Mini Season," is this week, Wednesday and Thursday, July 29 & 30.
The Sheriff’s Office would like to remind everyone the two day sport lobster season is here.
Anyone who plans to participate catching lobster in Monroe County during the two day season on July 29th and 30th should make sure to familiarize themselves with both state law and with local ordinances in the Florida Keys.
Additionally, Sheriff Rick Ramsay would like to remind everyone who lives here and who is visiting, marine thefts are a real problem in the Florida Keys and thieves may see the two day sport season as an opportunity to target people who aren’t being careful with their valuables. Make sure you remove electronics, fishing and diving gear from your boat when you aren’t on it and store this valuable equipment somewhere secure.
During the two day sport season, the Sheriff’s Office will have extra patrols at boat ramps, bridges and on the water. Anyone caught with illegal lobster will be charged accordingly. All Sheriff’s Office boats will be on patrol, and deputies will also be operating a number of WaveRunners donated to the Sheriff’s Office by Riva South Motorsports. Riva South donates the WaveRunners each year to be used for law enforcement purposes such as this, as well as for regular patrols of hard to reach shoreline areas and residential canals.

Featured TV Series: Bloodline

Netflix original "Bloodline" was filmed in the fabulous Florida Keys.

It centers around a family in Islamorada, who own and manage an "Inn" which is actually The Moorings Resort.  The family house is the Main House at The Moorings, which local Keys folks also recognize as a close twin to Pierre's restaurant.  The Moorings, Pierre's & Morada Bay Cafe have the same ownership and architecture.

The Rayburn family are pillars of the Islamorada community; the parents run the Inn, their daughter is an attorney, one son is a detective and sheriff's deputy, another son operates his own business refurbishing boats at a local marina.  But, things get interesting when the black sheep son comes home, dredging up old family secrets and threatening to both ruin the family's reputation and destroy them financially.

The scenery is amazing, of course!  I enjoyed the story and thought the writing and acting were both good.  Sam Shepard and Sissy Spacek are wonderful, again of course!  But all the rest of the cast are strong as well, especially Ben Mendelsohn who plays Danny the bad boy.  The style of filming was also well done and interesting.  Sometimes it seemed that the camera was hiding in the room, observing and seemingly capturing the characters unaware and vulnerable.  Even the soundtrack is good.

While I did really enjoy the story, I got an extra thrill from seeing all the familiar backdrops and scenes set in places I go regularly.
Some of the boating scenes were filmed in the bay right in my "backyard"...

I saw Morada Bay (of course), MM88, The Whistle Stop, Caribbean Club, The Safari Lounge (DAB), Caloosa Cove Marina, Bud & Mary's Marina, Sunshine Market (right across the street from me!), Alabama Jacks, oo-tray's parking lot(!) and more.
The big party in the very first episode was catered by Caribbean Catering and we recognized their lights, chairs, dishes, and Debbie's special touch!

(Sam & Danny Rayburn in one of the "swingy" tables at MM88.)

(Danny Rayburn with Chelsea and Eric O'Bannon at The Whistle Stop.)

(Danny at Alabama Jacks.)

Bloodline has been renewed for a second season, supposed to premier sometime in 2016.
So far I haven't seen or heard when they will begin filming.  When they were filming the show last summer, we were staying in Boston and missed all the excitement.  Looking forward to being around town when the next season is filmed...who knows, maybe I can sneak on as an extra!  How fun would that be?

It is only available from Netflix, and only streaming at this time.  I highly recommend this show, it gets 2 thumbs up and 5 stars from me.

What did you think about Bloodline?

Featured Restaurant/Bar/Resort: Chad's Deli

Ask a local where to get the best deli sandwich in the upper Keys and they will tell you Chad's.  Ask a local where to get the best pizza in the upper Keys and they will tell you Chad's.  Ask a local... well you get the idea.  Sandwiches, pizza, burgers, pasta, the best chicken salad (ever, hands down, period) and so much more...ask a local and they will tell you to go to Chad's Deli.

I can tell you honestly that Chad feeds me at least weekly (sometimes more.)  I'm partial to the chicken salad (did I mention that it's the best ever, hands down, period) on the homemade pumpernickel bread, both the California Cobb and the Santa Fe salads, and Chad's No-Carb Pan Fry is to die for...and mostly healthy!  But, everything is great.

All of the breads are homemade,
and so are the desserts/pastries.

The list of homemade soups is quite impressive, and every one more delicious than the last.  I do tend to favor the Mushroom Brie, but the Crab & Lobster Bisque is close to heaven.  Their menu is on the website, check it out ( www.chadsdeli.com ) and you can see all the soups, breads, etc. - they even serve breakfast every day except Monday.

The staff are all friendly, the service quick and efficient.  They serve beer and wine.  Eat-In or Take-Out, either way, Chad's is a local's favorite.  Be sure and ask for the Locals Loyalty Card.  It's $10 a year, but the proceeds go to Coral Shores High School and it entitles you to discounts, rewards and special offers.

Featured Restaurant/Bar/Resort: Skippers Dockside

A new addition to Key Largo this season, Skipper's Dockside has been welcomed by locals and tourists alike.  The renovations to the property are spectacular (especially for those of us who remember the prior establishment!)

With several bars, a huge tiki bar, gorgeous views, live music every night, and top quality food and specialty drinks, Skipper's is a very welcome addition to the upper Keys.

The menu is largely seafood dishes, but there are also plenty of choices to please the land-lubbers.
The specialty drink menu contains the usual suspects like margaritas, mojitos, shipwrecks, and daiquiris.  But, it also contains some interesting twists on your favorites as well some new and, in some cases, quite different flavor combinations.

My personal favorite is the "Reel 'Em In."
Mezcal, cilantro, serrano chili, cucumber, lime and sugar cube... it is the most unusual, and one of the most delicious and drinkable cocktails I've ever had.
They go down waaay too easy!

Skipper's features some of the upper Keys best musicians 7 days a week: Scott Youngberg, Lee Sharp, Bob Bonnen and Reggie Paul just to name a few.

If you haven't been to Skipper's Dockside yet, do yourself a favor.  Go for dinner, drinks, and music in a relaxed and fun setting.  You'll be glad you did!
